      <image:title>Scottish Activities</image:title>
<image:caption>Andrew Morrison, Viscount Dunrossil, was born in London and educated at Eton and Oxford. His father, the second Viscount, is buried near the family home on the Island of North Uist, in the Outer Hebrides. Lord Dunrossil still owns a home there, but has lived for over thirty years in San Antonio, Texas. With a foot in each camp, a home on either side of the Atlantic, he can act as a bridge between Scotland and Scots overseas. Lord Dunrossil was invited to join the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, and for the last few years has served on its Executive Committee, where he acts as the Council’s link with the United States. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Council of Scottish Clans and Associations (COSCA) and an Honorary Patron of the American-Scottish Foundation. He is also a Governor and former Chairman of the Society of Scottish Armigers, whose President is the Lord Lyon, King of Arms. The Society acts as a resource for people interested in Scottish heraldry and in thorny issues of protocol. Many of the Scottish Chiefs are Honorary members of the society and their arms appear in the society’s Armorial, which was published during Lord Dunrossil’s time as Chairman. In addition, he is a Director of Scottish Heritage USA (SHUSA) and a member of the Hidden Glen Folk School, a community for the study of Gaelic culture. SHUSA has taken up the proposal, first formulated by Michael Newton of Hidden Glen, to establish a chair of Gaelic language and culture at UNC Chapel Hill. Lord Dunrossil has been the Guest of Honor or keynote speaker at Tartan Day events, Highland Games, Burns Nichts and St Andrew’s Day Dinners, as well as seminars like those put on by the Scottish North American Community Council and COSCA. Several of his speeches have been reproduced as articles on the COSCA website and then on individual clan society websites. One of these was in turn the subject of a piece in the Times of London, which attempted to stir up a controversy about the role of chiefs in the modern world. Lord Dunrossil is one of two hereditary chieftains of Clan Morrison (the other being Lord Margadale) under the overall Chief of the Clan, Alasdair Morrison of Ruchdi. Morrison is the ninth largest clan in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland in terms of numbers and the third largest in the Outer Hebrides, after MacDonald and Macleod.</image:caption>

<image:title>Poetry and Creative Non-Fiction - Andrew Morrison, Lord Dunrossil, has been writing poetry all his life.</image:title>
<image:caption>At Oxford, he co-founded the Oxford Literary Society and ran its Poetry Workshop in the 1970s. His poems appeared in Oxford Poetry Now, along with work by WH Auden, Anne Stevenson, Ruth Padel, and others. Publication was not pursued during his career in the commercial sphere, but more recently his poems have appeared in Acumen, a UK magazine, Voices, and in LOGOS, the magazine of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas. Morrison has been praised for having a very distinctive voice, quite different from so much that emerges out of modern American MFA courses. It differs both as a poetry of Ideas and for its use of form and sound. Early influences were mostly the Modernists, Pound, Eliot, and Wallace Stevens. Later years have seen the influence of Larkin, Heaney and Robert Browning come to the fore, the latter both for his use of ordinary, conversational, speech and for his playful, even mischievous use of rhyme.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Financial Services-About Me - Serving the Underserved</image:title>
<image:caption>On leaving Oxford, Andrew spent ten years with Kleinwort, Benson, a leading British Merchant Bank, including six years in the United States, where he rose to be Senior Vice President of Kleinwort Benson North America. On returning to London, he was asked to become the first Risk Manager and Chief Credit Officer for the bank’s new Securities Division. In December 1989 he moved permanently to the US to work with his father-in-law, Tom Brundage, and helped build up a successful consumer finance business, focusing on serving the underserved. Over the years he became a spokesman for the consumer finance industry, the chief architect of its public image and messaging, and of its policy of active engagement with regulators and consumer groups. He was asked to represent the industry on panels organized by groups like CFSI (now the Financial Health Network), NACCA, CSBS, NCSL, Pew Trusts and Advance America, as well as at industry-sponsored events. Among his accomplishments were the creation of the terms, “installment lending industry,” and the description of its core product, “safe and affordable.” He was the driving force behind reform bills passed in several state legislatures, helping the industry stand firmly on what the great reformer, Arthur Ham, called “the middle ground between laissez faire and annihilation,” instead of falling into oppositional, zero sum or binary modes of thinking, which never serve the interests of actual consumers. He has always held that the two most elements of any worthwhile policy are consumer protection and protecting (and expanding) the consumer’s access to credit that is safe and affordable. He authored or co-authored several resolutions passed by groups of state legislators like NBCSL, NHCSL and NOBEL Women in pursuit of these goals. Andrew joined the American Financial Services Association in the early 1990s. He served on its main board for 23 years, was chairman of its Independents Section, chairman of the Association, chair of its Nominating committee and of its industry training program, now known as the EDGE, (formerly the National Institute for Consumer Credit Management). He taught a class at the EDGE’s program at Marquette and later Mercer University on the folly of APR caps for over twenty years. He also served on the board of the AFSA Education Foundation for over 20 years, during which time it developed the outstanding Money$kill financial education program. Money$kill is provided free of charge to schools and adults around the country. During his time as AFSA Chair, Andrew also helped found the National Installment Lenders Association. In its early years, he was the chief architect of its messaging and principal spokesman when meeting with legislators or the CFPB. Andrew is a founding Director of the Equitable Growth Fund, along with Dr Rickie Keys. The EGF is concerned with identifying and addressing the unequal availability of critical resources in minority and lower income communities, focusing especially on healthcare deserts, food deserts and credit deserts. For over twenty years Andrew taught classes every Sunday at local Episcopal churches on a variety of subjects, including Celtic Christianity and the importance of compassionate listening. The Anglican tradition tries to follow what is called the via media, or middle way. It offers a model that is the opposite of what is to be seen in the current, divisive political scene. He believes that common ground is Holy ground. For fifteen years he also volunteered with the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County, leading teams that audited charities operating in the fields of child abuse and family violence. He chaired its Families and Communities Division and served on the Fund Distribution Committee. The techniques he learned at United Way of identifying and measuring actual client outcomes served him well when he acted as Treasurer for his church.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Family - A Family Devoted to Public Service.</image:title>
<image:caption>Andrew’s grandfather, WS “Shakes” Morrison, 1st Viscount Dunrossil, was a Member of the UK Parliament, Government Minister, and the first native Gaelic speaker to serve as Speaker of the House of Commons. On retiring from Parliament, he served as Governor-General of Australia. The beautiful avenue leading to Yarralumla, the Governor-General’s official residence in Canberra, is named Dunrossil Drive in his memory. Andrew’s father, John, the 2nd Viscount, was a British Diplomat, who served on six continents. While posted to South Africa, he attended the trial of Nelson Mandela and later arranged for law books to be smuggled into Mandela’s cell, so that the great man might be prepared to lead his country, if ever given the opportunity. Later he negotiated the independence of St Kitts Nevis. John served two terms as Governor of Bermuda and, in retirement, was appointed Lord Lieutenant of the Western Isles. Andrew’s mother, Mavis, Lady Dunrossil, headed the History Department at what became the University of Gloucestershire and served for over thirty years on the Gloucestershire County Council, retiring as chairman of the council on her 80th birthday. She was also the chairman of the Cotswold School for its first 23 years and Chair of the Friends of Gloucester Cathedral. While presenting her with an Honorary Doctorate, the Bishop of Gloucester described her simply as a “legend.” Mavis’s father, Dr. A. L. Spencer-Payne, gave up a successful Harley Street medical practice to build churches and schools in the Kalahari Desert. After being banned by the Apartheid-era South African government, he devoted his remaining years to raising funds for the South African Church Development Fund. Andrew’s father and grandfathers all interrupted their educations to volunteer for the armed services during world wars and his grandmothers also served. His maternal grandmother left the Guildhall, where she was training as a concert pianist, to become a nurse in WW1, and his paternal grandmother helped organize the Women’s Land Army in WW2, when her husband was Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. But the roots of this empathy for the oppressed and underserved lie deeper. The Morrisons are Gaels, indigenous Scots, whose language and culture were systematically persecuted by English-speaking Scots for hundreds of years. King James VI, who became James I of England, commissioned the Marquis of Huntly to “extirpate within a year the barbarous people of the Isles,” in other words to commit genocide against the Morrisons and other Hebridean people. Even in the mid twentieth century children were still subject to corporal punishment if heard speaking their native language in a school playground. Despite his own privileged upbringing, Lord Dunrossil has come to feel strongly that minority or native cultures and languages need to be protected and cherished. Furthermore, his father taught him what he called the Scottish ideal of equality: not equal outcomes but an equal opportunity to achieve those outcomes.</image:caption>
